PECHO !

Romantics in Carinthia

The Carinthian Lakes surrounded by mountains look so romantic. Just like all of Southern Austria. Many fishermen make stops here on their way to Italy; maybe because of the beautiful nature or the favorite spin fishing. However, most of them think that the lakes are cold and full of trout; lakes that do not provide to carp with as good conditions for growing compared with the lakes of Italy or France. To be honest, I also thought that. But when I imagined blue and green crystal clear lake with sailboats and mountains visible in steam clouds, sunset, mountains and lake covered in pink reflection, I was convinced I want to give it a try. The first impulse that I received was from my austrian friend Martin Hatzl; he sent me photographs of Ossiacher See lake and basic information about it.And in cooperation with the district superintendent Markus Weber, he arranged fishing from a ship caisson for me. That was something I had always wanted to try: rocking safely on the waves, being close to the fish, being immediately mobile and most importantly, having maximum privacy. The only thing I had to manage was to explain to my girlfriend that we would spend our vacation on an area of approx. 4×3 meters. That wasn’t so difficult, because I am very good at that.

It is not always about huge fish. I am also happy when I catch carp that weigh less than 10 kilograms.

It was the end of August, and we saw the mountain lake Ossiacher See for the first time. All illusions went quickly aside. We arrived in very cold weather. When Markus and Martin took our ship caisson to the lake and cold wind caused our eyes to tear up, I was thinking about the world, mankind, catastrophes and our future. There was a snowstorm that had covered the mountains in white. Yes, it was the end of August, and I don’t know how abnormal this is for this region.

Life is hard. Anyway, I had absolutely different ideas, just like my frozen girlfriend Gabriela. Markus anchored our caisson by a dock at the mouth of the bay. It seemed to be good strategic place, even though I had no idea what waited under the surface. When the boys left, I started to think how I should start.

It is an exceptional moment to have two carp of a similar size.

The temperature of water was good. That gave me hope that carp would feed well. There was nothing to think about; I started as I usually do. First of all, I poured my fish-baits over with liquid food All Amino Nutric. This food informs fish that there is some easily available food. I threw food in two places. In the first one, I used 15 kg of Caviar&Fruits boilie that I threw in the water. I decided to spread approx. 0.5 kg of boilie after each catch in second place. I needed to understand the habits and behavior of local fish and what kinds of fish there were. And I was very surprised. There were approx. 20 catches at the place where I previously spread the food. But none of the fish was the one I came here for. There were catfish, bream, roach and trout. The second place remained unnoticed. A positive thing was that I learned to get the fish out from the fishing lines and anchored ropes. Coping from the caisson was a little more difficult. But I had to get used to it in case I caught a bigger carp.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-195" title="A muscular and black body; the very fish I had dreamed of when I prepared for the Ossiacher See. However, I was absolutely shocked by the size of the local fish." src="http://www.lkbaits.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/11-300x201.jpg" alt="A muscular and black body; the very fish I had dreamed of when I prepared for the Ossiacher See. However, I was absolutely shocked by the size of the local fish.

I was looking forward to the morning, to the sunset, when I would see the beautiful nature around me. It was really cold at night. The sun rose, but unfortunately we couldn’t enjoy it. We were trapped by the steam rising from the cold lake and forming a mist above us. I threw the rod randomly and kept catching only normal fish. The second day the mist was dispersed by wind, and we saw the lake in its full beauty. The first carp caught on boilie came with the beautiful weather. Forest Strawberry. It was from the place where I fed only with a cobra feeder. It was a really “big” carp! It had almost 30 cm! Yes, it was a small fish, but it improved my mood. Honestly, it really made my day. Smaller catfish and other fish were finally replaced by my favorite fish: carp, the fish I am thinking of every single day. Even though the situation did not seem ideal, I hung on to my tactic. I spread approx. 10 kg of Caviar&Fruits boilie in the feeding area and left the second place in peace. I hoped that the strong activity of the small fish at the feeding area would attract the attention of carp. It was about time. Two hours after feeding, just like when someone swings a magic wand, the unwanted fish were gone and I started to catch carp. Wow. Such a great feeling. They finally answered my call. I finally had something to build on. It was a chance to move further. I like when carp cooperate. They were about 40 – 70 cm. Not huge, but contact with them calmed me down. Until the third evening, I caught more than 20 carps from the feeding area and one from the “non-feeding” area. The difference was obvious. “It was about time,” I was saying to myself. I already had a tactic for the smaller fish. I was trying to work out how to get to those bigger ones and keep the place attractive. I could do a lot from the caisson as I could fish in all points of the compass. That was ideal for my possibilities and another tactic that proved good in terms of big carp. I call it “leaving my places empty.” The place where I put a lot of food from the beginning and where I got regular activity was cut out for it. It was time to start. On the fourth day, I stopped feeding and catching there. In the meantime, I spread food on the other place, approx. 100 meters far away. I wanted them to “eat up” the first place and then to go away or to the new feeding place. Who knew if my ideas were right. If so, then at least partially. Trophy carp that live in small groups or alone don’t like too much excitement. On the other hand, they are often close to places with food, and they are aware of the food. That is my experience. The new feeding place was working well not even in one day and I saw new types of fish. After some time, I tried to put attractive bait to the original and now an “empty” place to find out whether the small “piranhas” are still there. In these cases, I use the most attractive Fluoro Pop-Up Compot NHDC. Within 30 minutes, I caught smaller carp. The place didn’t seem empty yet, this not suitable yet for my intention. However, it didn’t take long, and this attractive bait lay in the water a longer time without notice. Therefore, I baited one ball of Caviar&Fruits. That was my tactic. And I was catching 5 – 10 kg carp in the new feeding place; the old “empty” place was calm – that is, until the next morning, when it came. It was slow. The reel turned very slowly. Usually, I cannot determine the size of a fish in this situation, but now I was sure there was something on the other side that I hadn’t seen here before. The carp went around the caisson in circles and stayed at the bottom. I left him. I wanted him to get tired at a sufficient distance from the caisson for a simple reason: the water under us was 5 meters deep, and there were several ropes and fishing rods. But my plan didn’t work.

When the trip ended, I packed the rods last, one by one. Before I packed the last one, I caught this beautiful carp.

The carp swam in our direction and directly under the caisson. It was time to get him out. How should I have known if I could pull more or not? When would it burst? It was terrible. The carp felt safe under us, and so I weaved the rod under the anchorage ropes. I somehow managed, but when I saw the carp’s body, I got nervous. I had the same feeling as when I caught my first carp. It happens sometimes, and I wished it were over and that I could raise the landing net with a tired carp. I really didn’t expect such a fish. It was it. A huge, black carp. Exactly the one I had imagined in finding in a mountain lake. I don’t know how long we fought over the last meters of the fishing line, but one thing was for sure: I won! I gathered the carp and left it in the net. Gabina guarded it. For those moments, I had a second rod prepared. I threw it in the “empty” place. This paid off many times. I hoped the carp wasn’t there alone and hadn’t frightened its friends. “It might be OK; the water is about 5 meters deep,” I thought. I set the detector and went to review my strike. Hook No. 8 looked quite funny in the carp’s jaw. But he sat there quietly.

It is there. I love catching carp.....

I took it out. A huge, black carp: what a beauty. We were all happy, even our dog Miky; she was running around the carp happily. As we prepared to take some pictures, the swinger on the other rod went off. I placed the carp in the base and lowered it from the caisson. And then something caught on the other rod. Wow…it was there! The rod bent, the fish went slowly into the deep water, and we started laughing. I enjoyed the second fight in absolute ease. I knew there was one huge beast waiting for me under the caisson. And it could have been even better now. But as the fight went on and on, I started to feel uncertain. My heart was beating and my knees were buckling. I didn’t want to lose it. Not even the previous experience of coping with a similar royal fish removed the adrenaline, the trembling, the restlessness and excitement. At that moment, I experienced two “fights of my life” in sequence, and I also wanted to win the second one. I didn’t want to lose that feeling of directing the carp into the landing net, placing it on the base and looking at it eye to eye. Each carp has an individual expression, is differently aggressive, and each one tries to gain back its freedom. They are similar, but also very different. And I won again! We were resting after the fight…. the carp and I. I was thinking about what must go through their heads. Do they realize what happened? When I saw those two giants lying on the base, I was happy. Those cold nights, convincing Gabina, wet clothes and getting Miky out the lake paid off. It might seem that everything repeats; but for me, it is always a new story. Even when the main heroes are identical. Every year, I travel to different waters and try to overcome new and new obstructions, think of new tactics, getting used to different water biotopes and outwitting them.

This is perhaps the first time I don’t know how to begin. Nevertheless, I feel compelled to share with you my many experiences. I mean, a lot happened during my carping years. Maybe I should begin slowly, step by step, and the writing will go better. But I am not sure if you are interested or if I could get that much space in the magazine.

Two-tone fish. The fish that Lukas caught first; he was really happy about it

While sitting at home in the warmth, gazing at the monitor and sometimes also outside the window at chilly winters day I remember all the adventures, one by one. I also like these days; moments when your mind wanders to memories of past sessions. During the season, one doesn’t even realize one’s own successes or mistakes to be learnt from So I enjoy all of it again, in private. I am fishing in the river Elbe for a while, afterward at my favorite sandpit, or I hide under a huge displaced aspen by one god-forsaken lake … it is beautiful to go back there. I like the surroundings and the fish that I can see and have caught.

I also undertook one expedition abroad. Those who know me know that I am always looking for different hunting grounds, waters and places not known to many people. I like my secrets, and I reveal them to my friends only when I already have new secrets.

A carp attracted to Wild Strawberry

I apologize, but please take me as I am. I am also not interested in the weight of fishes or records, despite the fact that the story in this article will get a little bit out of control. I like to catch smaller and somehow interesting carps. I love to chuck the rods in untouched waters to find their potential secrets.I am always looking for such hunting grounds. I know it is easier – and often also financially less demanding – to visit familiar locations. But this would spoil the whole charm I already mentioned. I have already visited several foreign hunting grounds that are generally unfamiliar, and I could visit them again without worries. But I wanted to experience something new with my girlfriend. I collected information from Belgian, Dutch and French carpers. I also considered invitations to some of their favorite hunting grounds.

We almost hypnotized the rod from under the umbrella – “Come on now!”

But that is not really what I am looking for. Perhaps some other time. And so we loaded our car at the end of the summer holidays and set out on our journey. A long journey, experiencing hunting grounds, finding out fishing conditions, dealing with tiredness, disappointment, hope. We experienced all of that until the moment we finally parked the boat among the reeds of one smaller lake. Yes, that was something for me. I knew there are mainly leather carp (the biggest leather carp caught in this water weighted 28 kg) and so-called smaller two-tone leather carp here. I saw a couple of them in pictures taken by foreign fishermen. We liked them a lot, and therefore we chose this location. The tactics for waters I know little or not at all is almost identical. I follow a sixth sense or intuition and head to some place that says, Yes, it could be good here. It is hard to explain clearly. Last time I used an echo-sounder was years ago, at Lake Cassien, and I haven’t had one since it broke. But this doesn’t affect my life, and I had no reason to buy a new one. I always spread the feed in a greater area. Usually, I use my favorite Sea Food boilie. This type has a slower kickoff, but its finish is excellent if you observe the feeding doses. I use it to attract the fish but I use something else, faster, for fishing so I can make the most of the first days. Two or three days later, I start using the Sea Food. You might say feeding less would be more effective and would give us a better chance to catch carp. Yes, why not, but this is good in hunting grounds where you know the exact occurrence-movement of carp. I didn’t know that here, and I needed to attract the fish. Therefore I used approx. 10 – 20 kg of fish-bait without particle on the first day. Someone might not understand that: Why so much? Have you ever tried to throw 5 kg of boilie – for example, in 5-meter-deep water – and to dive? If so, then you understand when using this quantity, one can’t speak of fishing above the feeding area (feeding carpet). And so it is necessary to consider whether you want to invoke the voracity and achieve that fish keep coming back to your feeding areas or to catch fish that swim by. You know my tactic and type of fish-bait in such cases.

The rod is in the water; we could smell another catch in the air

The day went by, and our rods hadn’t moved. Even my favorite feed for short trips, Wild Strawberry, wasn’t working. The water level was, in my opinion, too still. We rested under our umbrella and listened to nature. If a carp jumped within the feeding area, we would hear it. I was fishing only 30 meters from the water’s edge. The first success came on the second day. The fish was quite vital, and I underwent an adventure in reeds. A 20-meter-wide zone of reeds reached in 1.5 to 2 meters. I jumped in the water, hung the landing net around my neck and started to wade through the reeds. I only stopped when the water began to leak in my rubber boots. The reeds were to the left of me, to the right of me and in front of me. And the carp were heading sideways, directly into the reeds. I thought, “Shit.” I could hear the carp in the reeds, reallydeep. I laid the rod among thick stalks and walked into the place from where I heard noise. It was there. I made my way to it slowly.

It was difficult to raise some fish; may be I should start with gym

I even caught the fishing line from the bottom side and walked farther. There was a big leather carp standing in the reeds. Its wide back was beautiful. He stood there like a horse, and I waited till he started swimming, and that ends this story. I walked slowly, pushed the reeds to the side and got the landing net ready for an attack. “I have to do it slowly, not to scare it away. But how should I get it into the landing net? Because of the reeds, I won’t reach it from the bottom, and to lie on it from the top in a depth of around 1.5 meters is also not a good choice,” I planned my attack. I only had one try; that was the only thing that was certain. I put the landing net over its head and attacked it from behind. The carp got frightened, and I felt how it hit the landing net. Unfortunately, I missed it. It was gone. I took off my soaked rubber trousers and thought that maybe I shouldn’t choose such places. I remembered some hunting grounds with beautiful areas, mowed grass and mole hills. I dreamed for a while when setting a new boilie on the rig and thought about what it would be like to compete with a carp in such a place. I think my girlfriend was also thinking about that.

Another fish caught on Sea Food ... is this me? Wasn’t it just a dream?

Why can’t she sunbathe sometimes, and why can’t we go somewhere where our dog, Miky, doesn’t have to sleep in a sleeping bag with us covered in mud? Well, there’s no point dwelling on that; maybe some other time. The first contact with the fish was important. I spread the feed again. I also prepared a second place, approximately 100 meters away. It was the fourth day of the expedition, and carp were showing up closer and closer to our first feeding area. In the afternoon, I jumped in the water again after a carp and followed the fishing line. I always tried to be slightly ahead of the fish. It wasn’t easy, but I started to understand the fish. Of course, it always pulled in counteraction. If I attacked it from one place and didn’t follow it, it would swim sideways and I would lose it again. In this way, I directed it into the landing net. I calmed down when I carried the carp back to the bank. That was it: the two-tone leather carp. I was in a state of euphoria. I took out the bag of boilie, mixed it with my favorite liquid feed and threw it in the water. A few moments later, I took the rod out of the water, and we moved on to a different place where I spread feed for three days in a row. This place wasn’t that far from the first place, but the fish in this place wouldn’t be scared after I caught the fish at the first place. It was a good idea to move on; the rod moved immediately. Great. The Sea Food started to work. I had a beautiful leather carp in the landing net. The dimensions of the carp surprised me a little bit. Because there were carpers from Belgium nearby, Gabriela went to borrow scales so we could know how much the fish weighed. The scales showed between 25 and 25.5 kg!

Full moon. Does it have a magic power?

I had goosebumps and this certain feeling … the same feeling as many times before. I started talking to myself, and my girlfriend knew I had submerged into my own world. She knew there would be little talking because I felt the big moment, chance, success … and so I worked even harder. After another fish, we moved back to the first place. I could see the full moon above the trees. I like it. Some people don’t believe in its power, but I do. And, besides, I don’t have to turn my forehead torch on, and I can work at night. And I can see every move on the water’s surface. It was a really busy night. I didn’t sleep, and I watched a carp jump into the feeding area. “Is it the same fish, or are there more of them? If it’s not the same fish, there must be a number of really huge fishes there,” I wondered to myself. I waited for the rod to move. “Come on, eat the right one; take it, my little fish. What are you waiting for?” The dawn was approaching, and the moon slowly disappeared into the mist. They were there, and nothing was happening. I didn’t understand it and went to sleep.

I just couldn’t raise it...

Before I moved my girlfriend and Miky aside, a green LED lit up. I took off all my clothes and ran to the rod with the landing net in my hand. “Come on, you waited this long … I knew you would eat it all and then you would try to eat the right balls.” It is hard to comment on this particular moment. Over the course of two hours, I had managed to catch five carp; three of them had to be approx. 20 – 25 kg. And now, believe me that I am not interested in making records …. but I had to laugh. Sometimes it just happens. I think I didn’t deserve it yet at that point in my carper’s life. I know many other, older fishermen I would wish it to instead… and I had no idea what would come next.

We were very happy. We decided to pack our stuff and travel around the region checking out other waters. When I feel OK, I can’t be stopped. It is like a child being left home alone with chocolates within reach on the table. I behave the same way. I have to eat all the sweets until they are gone. I hope you know what I mean. I am actually “a hoarder.” We stopped in at a fishing shop on our way. It was covered with pictures of beautiful leather carps and interesting long carps. They were very narrow. People in the shop told me where to find these carps. They were living in a big lake and a few of them also in canals. There was a picture of a huge black leather carp on the main wall of the shop. The locals were talking about this carp. I tried to explain that

“Come on, take the picture.... I caaaaan’t!”

I want to catch those slim long and narrow carps. But they said this gigantic fish lives in the same lake, and, when someone caught it last year, it had more than 33 kg. “Wow, I probably wouldn’t even be able to carry such a fish,” I said to Gabina. My eyes were focused on a yellow-grayish leather fish. And we decided to go where it lived. Channels or lake? Lake. No change in tactics. Again, we parked the boat in the reeds and waited for the first sign of carp at the feeding area. Nothing happened for three days, but I didn’t panic. I trusted my tactics and the feeding. It was a very cold night. Quiet. I waited for the aggressive long leather carp, and it came in the morning. But this carp was smaller, very high and sort of orange-colored. I caught another three of them. I was happy, but I wanted that long fish. I knew I would remember this forever. It had to come. I couldn’t get to it, so I placed the rods in shallow water – depth from 0.5 – 0.75 cm. I enjoyed it. “Those fat leather fishes won’t get there, and I will get what I want. And, if not, I can get a good night sleep,” I told Gabina. Before the morning, I was awoken by the sound of the detector. I felt a pull, which indicated that the fish had swum into the water grass, and I am pulling the grass with the fish. Sometimes it felt like competing with a clump of grass. So I pulled the rod with greater force to roll the fishing line. I couldn’t. I couldn’t see anything, but I heard that that the grass was at the water level. I still couldn’t roll the fishing line; grass started to immerse and swim sideways. “OK. Something is there, and it is huge.” I was chest-deep in the water, and the fish started to realize that it was in danger. I knew I had to pull before it recovered and swam away: “Now or never.” The landing net swam on the water level, and I searched for its handle. The fish was still by the bottom.

Horse team

Judging by the bent top of the rod, it couldn’t have been far now. No farther than the length of the rod. I couldn’t get it away from the bottom. It was as if it were glued on. But it moved a little. “That’s right. Come here, you little one!” I already saw a lead seal, which meant the fish was close. To have the water up to your neck and stand on tiptoes is not easy. But I couldn’t make a mistake; I had to force it into the landing net on the first try. Slowly, quietly. Centimeter by centimeter, I almost didn’t move. I was ready to end this. I saw the water moving, and I made quite funny move. The rod fell into the water, and I raised the landing net with both hands. It was there! I moved my shoulders around the landing net, raised the rod with my foot and started to back out of the water. The carp moved and became angry. I held it with all of my might to prevent its escape and realized there was something huge in the landing net. I called Gabriela; she got into the water and passed me the raising board. Together, we placed the carp on the raising board and moved it along the mud and ashore. There was a huge creature in front of us. I had never seen anything like it!

The next few moments can’t be described, not even partly. We couldn’t speak. I sat in the mud, and tears were streaming from my eyes. I hugged my girlfriend and my dog and tried to realize the meaning of this happy moment. A few moments of a feeling that I might never experience again. A moment with this huge carp; judging by its dimensions, I think it was probably a unique moment in my life. Fascinated by all of this, I didn’t even realize that it was the fish I had seen a few days earlier in the fishing shop.

When I take the last rod out the water, adrenalin and tension are slowly gone. I can slowly return to normal life. I packed the last stuff, loaded the car and said goodbye to the water. I will remember it forever. I couldn’t take my eyes off it. It gave me possibly one of its biggest hen fishes and many adventures. I think I will probably never hold the fish that I am taking home on the memory card again. I really enjoy the way home from very successful expeditions. When I see some nice water from the window, I am thinking about what type of carps swim in it. Rarely, I stopped the car with such interest.

1.	First night fish from the canal. They are out there...

We saw cloudy water surrounded by concrete walls, a small channel. Maybe a dirty canal to some, but for me the type of the water I have never fished in and that represented many questions. I don’t know what or who (perhaps St. Peter, patron of fishermen) compels me to do it. Sometimes I behave like I have no brain; my sixth fisherman’s sense governs my steps and actions. One was sure, I have to cancel all planned meetings and call the company that I stay another couple of days. I apologize to everyone, but I just had to stay there!

When I turned the phone off, I returned to my second life – normal and for me so natural life. I like it a lot. I thought about the talks I had with fishermen who were fishing in these localities. I remembered the magical V Canal and its monsters, beautiful SommeCanal I was preparing for or the successes of my Slovak colleagues at the MaduniceCanal. Generally, I didn’t have much information about these waters. Maybe that was the reason I decided to fish in the canal about which I didn’t know anything. I didn’t even know its name, and I don’t know it until now. But that wasn’t so important; it was time to place the first bait in the water. I only had about one kilo of the Sea Food left (not much) and three 10 kg bags of Caviar&Fruits. So the decision was made automatically. The most important step in similar waters is to stop the fish, not to scare it, and catch it. This is only in case there are fishes in these waters or they are not swimming several kilometers away. I distributed the bait and montages so the fish swimming by have to come into contact with my bait.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-303" title="2.
The cards were distributed. The sun was going down behind the trees, and the first night began. I sat by the rods and listened to nature. The night was calm and the water almost lifeless. At dawn, I stood out and went to look at sleeping Gabina. She was up already. When she saw my face, she realized nothing had happened that night, and she asked if something even lives in this canal. I turned around and went to observe the water level. If I saw a small circle on the water level, I would have been calmer. All my doubts ended after I saw a small 15 cm bream. I was as happy as a small child. Since then, I saw small movements in the water. The biggest attraction was, however, the passing boats. Some of them almost touched the canal walls with their sides. I had to change my montages after each of them because they twisted them around. Another sunset. I noticed typical bubbles near the canal walls. The water got even darker, and the bubbles came near to my feeding areas. Fish passed one of the rods and continued in their direction, as if they were eating something from the canal walls. None of the rods was directly under the edge. I immediately took the spare rod and ran with it to a place it in those places. I walked on tiptoes and watched the direction of bubbles. The fishes were swimming along the canal walls, directly to my new trap. I could cut the air at that moment. Are there carp? How big are they? Will they turn around? No! They continue. It was too dark to see them. One was sure. In their pace, they will soon reach the place where I put the rod. Only few more minutes and they will reach my trap.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-306" title="3. Our running course...

I sat next to the rod and looked at its tip. I was ready to find out what type of fish there were. When the tip straightened, I jammed the rod. Wow…wow…unbelievable. I managed to shout out the word “landing net” to my girlfriend, and I ran after the fish along the canal. This was a totally new experience, something unbelievably beautiful. I didn’t pull the fish, I didn’t go after it in the boat. I ran along the canal. When it felt that I was close, it turned around and changed direction, and we ran back. She tried to get rid of the montage by rubbing it against the canal walls. By running after it, I made this impossible. I could hear it. It wasn’t a small fish. Another two movements and the first fish from the canal was out. “There are fishes there, and they are not small,” I told the darkness. My first carp from the canal laid on the board. An unbelievable experience. From water that was 5 – 8 meters wide and max. 2 meters deep. Really unbelievable what types of fish live in such waters. The carp wasn’t that tall, but the width and size of its body indicated there is more than enough food in the canal. The run along the water indicated that I would have a good night’s sleep. There must have been lots of fish.

4.	True love...what else can I say?

I also started to understand the darker sides of carp fishing in canals. So I took the rods out and prepared everything for the next day. It took almost all day before I could jam the rods again and run. But this time I enjoyed it in the daylight. I saw the fishing line cutting through the water. A great experience. I almost didn’t notice that a smiling crew from Belgium passed through the canal. But my smile was gone immediately. I knew that the carp had enough power, and if it decided to swim toward the boat, I wouldn’t have many chances. Interestingly, the boat pushed the carp in front of it. And so we ran and swam together. My dog Miky and Gabina with the landing net ran behind me. There was a beautiful boat at my side with a crew that didn’t understand what I was up to, and the carp determined the direction.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-312" title="5. Carp fed from the walls and edges of the canal; I found out why...

Tell me, where can you experience that? The situation changes. The carp turned around and started to swim toward the boat. I knew this was not good at all. At the moment when the carp was close in front of it, I laid it on the ground, leaned toward the canal, and, with the tip of the rod, I tried to govern the fishing line as close to the bottom as possible. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 … it wasn’t longer. I raised the rod again to find out whether I had lost the carp. It was there and swam back, but not as quickly as before. It was getting weaker. This was obvious at the moment the fish changed direction and didn’t know where to swim. I found out later that every weakened fish behaves identically. In the end, they all came to the water’s surface, and I picked them up with the landing net. This time the fish was unbelievable, an unbelievably strong and long carp with a huge back fin. I was getting more and more interested in this dirty canal…

<img class="size-medium wp-image-315" title="6.	This fish prepared an unbelievable adventure for me. It determined the direction for a full 30 minutes, and I was chasing after it like a tail. But it was worth it, don’t you think?" src="http://www.lkbaits.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/71-300x201.jpg" alt="6.	This fish prepared an unbelievable adventure for me.
Carp fishing in canals is really great. Maybe I enjoyed it because it was so different. It is interesting and not for everyone, which is very important for me. These waters are not for fishermen who need a large background. Also, it is hard to catch fish when there are two fishermen, as each is in the other’s way, and I would never want to rely on the fact that my colleague is e.g. on my left side so quiet that he won’t disturb many fishes. Carp in canals migrate long distances, and it is obvious that, if you waste your chance, you can only pray that they will come back soon. I remember one time when the carps came from one direction. I only caught one, and after taking pictures of it, I moved one kilometer lower down to the place where I assumed that the carps will swim to.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-318" title="8.
Within an hour, I had the second carp in the landing net. I don’t know if it was from the same flock, but I am convinced I would have to wait much longer to catch another carp in the original place.

Maybe a few hours, days even… Canals have become my new carp fishing destination. The longer I collect information about canals, more I realize that a new book from the carper world opens up to us. There are only a few fishermen who like these waters, and only a minority of them purposely catches trophy carps in these waters. However, I have to say such localities are in every country, even in the Czech Republic, and they remain almost unnoticeable. Very big fishes swim in them, and believe some of them will see our boilie for the first time in their life!

As I write these lines, the fishing events, exhibitions and carpers’ parties in are in full winter swing. Perhaps it would be better if the season had already begun, and I could relax a bit by my beloved waters, either alone, or with my dog or my girlfriend. I would like to return to places that fascinated me last year and I have kept secret until now. Unfortunately, I cannot wave a magic wand and transport myself to the hunting grounds I dream of so very often. And so I return there in my mind. Several expeditions and great adventures come into my mind’s eye, but each exceeds the others not only in terms of adventure but also experiences and trophies.

It actually started kind of unobtrusively. My girlfriend proposed we go somewhere for a holiday by the sea, without our rods. I can’t imagine lying by the water when it’s hot and without my rods. That’s crazy! After a few minutes of discussion, we reached a compromise. I described a beautiful sandpit; one of us would be fishing and the other could enjoy tourism or cycling. Of course, I didn’t know the area, but even if I should be catching cru<ins datetime="2011-04-14T17:56" cite="mailto:luke">c</ins>ian carp at the local pond, it would be more interesting than all of the earth’s sea creatures. And so each of us packed alone. I spent a few days selecting the location. I spent quite lot of money on telephone calls with my friend Roman Orlicky from Slovakia; Roman knows perfectly local waters. I wanted to visit the Danube, but that wouldn’t be a very good swimming destination for my girlfriend. Then I remembered waters where I hadn’t dared to go. To explain this: There are probably the worst conditions for fishing. One can be fishing only in determined places, there are hundreds of swimmers, sailing boats, noisy discos from campsites, prohibition of fishing at night (even staying by the water is prohibited), difficult fishing, unknown population of carps and several other factors that put off most fishermen. And that’s it! In the past, I collected information about these waters. I am aware there are not many carpers in these hunting grounds, not even in the summer season. And that would fulfill both mine and Gabina’s conditions.

When we arrived to our destination, I paid for a one-week stay at a campsite. I put up a bivvy, as close to the water as possible so I would have the biggest possible privacy. And my girlfriend – she had already laid out her blanket for sunbathing. I sat in the bivvy and closed my eyes. “That shouting, those people, I can’t stay here,” I thought. And so I took a pump, blew up the boat and went out onto the water. I calmed down a little. I was in the boat for several hours and then I heard something in my head. I thought up a plan that would be more suitable for an army than for a vacation and my girlfriend, who had no idea. I enjoyed thinking about the plan, and my brain switched into a different mode not related to normal life at all. I spread the feed – four kilograms of boilie and granules – in three different places. When I returned to the campsite, I told Gabina we would go fishing the next day. Surprisingly, she agreed.

My alarm clock went off at 4 a.m. Here we go. Arrange all in the boat and head in the direction of one of those places. Our sausage dog, Miky, got into the boat, and off we went. We arrived at out destination. I switched off the electric engine and paddled quietly ashore around the reeds. Gabina has quietly laid out our camping bed so she could get some more sleep. And this was my time. I stood in the water with my rubber trousers and fixed the lead seal in the places where I had previously distributed the feed. Great, rinsed ball on the first rod, dipped ball on the second rod. I didn’t even distribute more feed, because I didn’t want to scare the fish. I assumed they were there. Everything was ready; the boat was hidden in the woods, and only the tips of the rods stuck out from the branches. I don’t like it when someone knows about me, and so I like to hide even if I don’t have to. You might be surprised, but you can see more than if you sit on a small chair by the water. Of course, I am speaking about short-distance fishing.

I sat on the edge of the camp bed and started to watch what was happening in the woods. It was nice. Beautiful mushrooms, various animals. Maybe I am little sensitive, but when I thought about all those things that people do because of carp fishing, I couldn’t help myself. I often think some people are only interested in fish. They want as many fish as possible, sensations and records, regardless of how they achieve it. Not to even mention the hassle, unpleasant discussions and competition. I thought about all this; why is it so? Then I heard the most beautiful sound. My second world. The rope-drum turned faster and faster, and there was the first carp. The carp started immediately swimming in the direction of the water-lily field, and I followed him. Chest-deep in the water, with the landing net under my armpit and the top of the rod bent, I balanced between the roots of the water-lilies. The carp laid on the water level, and I gathered my first fish. I carried it ashore to show it to Gabriela. A beautiful henfish. Because it had been a while since I carried scales to the water, I evaluated it in my manner. It was a beautiful carp and experience! When I laid it down on the mat, I saw he was full of boilies, and there probably wasn’t any more left in the water. After I took its picture, I packed the second rod and gathered my stuff. “We have to move,” I said to my girlfriend. She packed her bed, sleeping bag and umbrella immediately and we got in the boat. Before we left for the second place, I distributed another four kilograms of boilie, just in case I wanted to return to this place. We had half a day ahead of us: enough time to try it again. We left that place and set off to a spot approx. 800 meters away that I liked a lot. Again, we reached the shore quietly, and all was ready within five minutes. I was lucky again around 6 p.m. This time, the fish attacked dipped (enhanced) ball. After 30 minutes, I gathered a huge leather carp. “So they are here after all,” I remarked to Gabina. Not long before sunset, we decided to return to the campsite. Swimmers were packing blankets, and I must have looked like the whole world was mine. I didn’t expect to come back with such a great experience on the first day. I felt great. I knew the tactic was correct. Only the next day without fishing spoiled my plans a bit. I packed away my rods and got mentally prepared for a walking tour I had promised to my girlfriend … but I would rather have stayed at those places forever.

It looked good in the morning. Raindrops falling on the bivvy could free me from the trip. I paid attention immediately. I was lucky. “Gabriela, we can’t walk in this weather; let’s go fishing and wait and see if the weather improves.” Before she answered, I had my waterproof jacket on and had arranged stuff in the boat. I covered everything with a sheet, and Gabina and Miky joined me. And so I headed in the direction of the places where I had distributed the feed. The wind blew, and the rain was getting stronger. I had to choose the closest place. In 15 minutes, we reached the shore. Unpleasant weather affected Gabina’s smile and she hid under her umbrella. The baits were lying at the bottom and I could rest. The wind was getting stronger, and it was raining under our cover. “This is not good,” I said to myself. My girlfriend was surprisingly calm; she probably didn’t realize that the only way back leads via the water and the waves were just getting bigger. But then I heard something. And again. “I got them; they are there,” I whispered. And then I stood in the water and competed with the carp. I ran into the water without a raincoat or rubber trousers. The rest of my dry clothes were drenched by the rain. But I couldn’t let go. I am not crazy … and so I kept standing there. Totally wet, but happy, I carried a huge leather carp ashore. The mood was better; Gabina took a picture of the fish and searched for a needle to place the accurate ball on the rod. It was clear I couldn’t move to our place now as originally planned. And so I threw approximately two kilograms of boilie in the water. Thanks to a strong counterwind, the balls were falling max. 10 – 15 meters from the shore. Time went by, and, as it got darker, it was clear we could not go out on the water. And so we had to spend this rough and cold night on one bed with our dog. I didn’t get much sleep. I listened to how active the fishes were. Despite the strong wind, rain and waves, I heard occasional movement in the water. The wind forced the fishes to the shore, and I couldn’t resist. At 4 a.m., I put cold rubber trousers and a raincoat on and plunged one rod behind the reeds. Before I managed to position the second rod, the LED lit up. This LED initiated a craziness lasting several hours in the slowly fading rain. The carps were hungry, and I fed the last remaining boilie I had meant for other places. The highlight of the day was two carps that I conquered after more than an hour and a half. Gabriela was holding one of them in the landing net, and I had to direct the other one in my arms while standing in the water. Unbelievable moment. The lighter carp (long black leather carp with disorderly scales) had 103 cm! I didn’t have a tape measure with me, but we made a line on the board so we could measure it after arriving home. Those carps were really big! Beautiful! God, I was so lucky. I can’t even describe that feeling of relaxation that we experienced in even such bad conditions. We didn’t have time to think about cold, hunger or thirst (we only had supplies for one day). And we were happy at that moment. When I released my carp, the water started to calm down. On one side unwillingly, I loaded everything quickly in the boat and ran to the car. I didn’t want to, but there was no other way. We were too tired and hungry. We dried the equipment and our clothes in the car. We had really had enough. As we expected, the bivouac had been taken down by the storm, and our replacement clothes and food were also wet. We had to pack our stuff and leave; we had no other choice.

On the way back, we stopped in a nearby shopping center to warm up and buy some food. We felt better after warm tea and food. It was still raining outside, but we decided to stop by somewhere else. Gabriela bought some cheap clothes, and I looked at the map at how to get home – if we drove along some interesting water. There was one way. I knew that if I got there, I wouldn’t leave without fishing. I think Gabina also knew this. And therefore we actually drove fishing again. I was in a good mood again, even better after arriving at the water. I didn’t really know this water, but I focused on the direction of the wind in that area. It was clear according to windblown plastic bottles and branches. The waves directed in the bay in an old dock-yard. There was nothing to think about. I didn’t unpack the boat and the other stuff. I simply threw the fishing line about 30 meters from the shore, in the clouded zone. This time, I put floats dipped in liquid feed Bacterie Septic on both rods. This product releases the same signal as a dead shell. I believed the wind would blow bodies of dead water animals into the bay and fish would like this feed. Nothing happened until midnight. The water calmed down, and I took the rods out. Gabriela went to sleep, but I didn’t want to. So I started the car and went to some running water 10 km away that we had passed on our way. I climbed under the bridge, looked around to make sure no one was sitting there, and distributed 3 kg of boilie. I was back in one hour and Gabina knew, when she saw my hands, that this expedition would end in a different place than where we were. I didn’t know what had gotten into me, but I knew I wasn’t about to stop.

I slept a bit longer, so I set the rods little late. There were two days until the end of our vacation. I sat on an old washed-up boat and enjoyed it. The sun was coming out from between the clouds occasionally. I saw movement and went closer to the rod and looked at the tip. It was moving. I looked at the fishing line to see if the movements were not sediments; it wasn’t. I jammed the rod. I pulled an unfamiliar fish. I had experienced such a hard pulling a couple of times before, and it was usually a heavy old fish or small carp tangled in the grass. 10 meters from the shore, it was pulling even harder. I couldn’t anymore. I had to go into the water. When I reached that place, I saw a piece of dorsal fin. It was a huge carp. The fish stood in one place, and I was quite surprised at how calm it was. I tried to pull her with the landing net but unsuccessfully. At that moment, I realized the fish was actually stacked in shallow water. So I place the landing net over it. The carp began to fight, but it was too late. It was in the net. I laid the rod in the water and started to pull the sides of the net around the carp so I could carry it safely to the shore. The more I saw of its body, the more shocked I was. “What type of carp is this? Come over here and help me, pass me the board,” I called out to Gabina. We carried the carp out on the board. It was so huge, tall and heavy. So proud and beautiful. It was even taller than longer. Fins like curtain fish. No, I had never caught a similar fish before. Long after I released it, I enjoyed that moment. I looked at its pictures just in case it was only a dream. With a big smile on my face, I put the camera in my bag, and I heard: “So, where are we going now?” I had to laugh even more. I didn’t have to say anything. As you know, for his case, I had already distributed some feed under the bridge.

The story would be too long if I were to describe what happened there, the last day under the bridge. I can say that I caught three long carps, about 12 – 15 kg.

I will keep the photos of these three fishes to myself for some time. You would realize that you know that bridge, and I don’t want to present some photomontage. I am being honest and it is what I really think. I want to keep this place a secret. What kind of fisherman would I be if I didn’t have my secret places? I believe you have some too. Therefore, I hope that you won’t be angry and you will understand my reasons. What else can I say? I will remember that week for a long time. I managed to catch so many beautiful fishes during those seven days, in three various water locations. At the end, I should state the question: Is luck enough? Not only after this expedition, I can say that it’s great when luck is on our side. But that’s not enough. You need more. High-quality feed, good location, well-chosen tactics, an accurate final montage. Yes, all of this helps to achieve success. But, if we remain seated with more rods in one place where it is allowed to fish 24 hours. I hope you understand what I wanted to say. So, take your rods and walk toward your luck! I look forward to your stories.

Hello everyone!
Finally I managed to find some time to go fishing and to try new baits LK.
This time, not having time to prepare before the fishing area, I chose a
small tributary of the River Po, which I know very well and I am entrusted
with the TOP RESTART NUTRIC ACID bait boilies & pellets.
I quickly realized the speed to attract fish for bait, and within minutes
came the first catch.
The attraction is not only immediate, but lasts for a long time since the
catches have continued for the duration of the session.
Thanks NUTRIC ACID! Thanks Lukáš

NUTRIC ACID

Nutric Acid Boilies – The synonym of success! Natural ingredients, extracts, enzym meal and a plant with incredible efficiency! If you add them to spray dried All Amino Nutric, you’ll get the best bait of these times! This is a real extactor for cathing a carp! Nutric Acid boilies is ready for all-year fishing. Due to its high price, most of the anglers will use it only as a single bait, but this was our intention while developing this product. This is the most effective magnet for a carp, we’ve created last years. This product is for “catch and release” fishing only!

You must know the situations when there is no contact with fish during your session. The fish don’t respond on your hookbaits. It is pretty common on the banks where lots of anglers are usual or during summer time. For these cases it is good to have the set of Nutric Acid products (boilies, paste, powder and liquid soaks) with you. It is your last chance. Nutric acid boilies is designed for fishing competitions, based on its ingredients and attractivity! It is also great hookbait for short session fishing. Most of angles go fishing just for few hours or one day. And most of them wants to take some action during those few hours. You must remember that late autumn, when Lukas was fishing short sessions at Labe and close gravel pits. He was using mostly Nutric Acid products to get the best results.

The production process of Nutric Acid boilies takes few days. After boiling and drying porcess, the product is dipped into our liquid food – All Amino Nutric (you don‘t need any further enhancement using this product). The particular boilie is not dipped completely into All Amino Nutric, because the air is needed for better soak process. After that there is a spraying process using natural extracts. At this wet condition it is immediately packed into product bags of 1kg or 250gr.

There is two soak products in the range of Nutric Acid. One of them is powder and the other one liquid. You can use the liquid one first and then coat your hookbait with powdered Nutric Acid concentrate. You can repeat this procedure three or more times. On the boilie surface will create very attractive layer, which is designed to stick on it even during casting or bump into water. After landing the ground it will immediately starts working. Powdered soak will create lots of particles in the area of hookbait. These particles is our food signal carrier. This is very attractive to carp, but it is only impalpable mouthful for him. What is palpable is your hookbait, actually. On the other side, the liquid soak will spread the signal into water column. Everything complements together and performs to lure a carp as soon as possible. If you leave your enhancement layers to dry, you will achieve slower process of course. In case you need extended signal spreading, use our Nutric Acid paste on top of those layers. It is also good combination for fishing the rivers. Take in account your boilie diameter is larger with using the paste, so it would be great that you adapt your rig hair a bit longer.

Now you can see, there is lots of combinations how you can use our Nutric Acid product range. We believe you will not get bored on the bank of the lake or river during your sessions. „The Carp must be somewhere behind the hils, if he doesn’t react this signal!“, says Lukáš Krása. Do not bait too much Nutric Acid boilies while fishing, use just a few of them around your hookbait, or in combination with PVA products.

For baiting purpose we have prepared for you Nutric Acid pellets, which are produced in 4mm size for PVA bags or even 12 and 17mm. The last two are packed together within 1kg package half-and-half. These pellets can be used also as a hookbait, because they are produced with the hole inside. The brakedown time of the pellets is about 4-6 hours, as it depends on water temperature. You can extend it using Nutric Acid paste as a top layer on your pellet.

Before baiting, apply the Nutric Acid Fish powder as a coating layer on it.
